Its origins are not very clear because for some people it is Africa, and for others India, Afghanistan or China. But the truth is that there is evidence that existed in the Ancient Egypt 2,400 years ago (BC). It was also consumed by the Romans in the third century and by the Muslims. In Spain, it was introduced by the Arabs, the French started to eat it in the sixteenth century and was Columbus who introduced it in America in one of his trips.
The melon is an herbaceous and climbing plant, of the family Cucurbitaceae. This fruit needs tropical and dry climates and soils rich in organic materials, soft and well-drained. This is way the European countries import melons from countries with tropical climates such as Brazil, Costa Rica, Israel, Morocco, Honduras or Ecuador.
Spain is the main European producing country, followed by the Netherlands and France. The Spanish areas where melons are grown are Almería, Murcia, Valencia, Castellón, Cuenca, Ciudad Real, Madrid and Elche (Alicante).
Melons contain a 90% of water, carbohydrates (sucrose), a few calories, they are low in fibre and, as a result, they are highly recommended for weight-loss diets.
